Dallas-Fort Worth Airport is considered to be a major gateway to the state of Texas, in the United States of America, and is one of the world’s largest airports. Its approximate 69 million passengers per annum ranks the airport as the eighth busiest in the world, and its large number of aircraft movements puts it in third place among all the airports on the globe. Dallas Airport is located practically equidistant from the two cities of Dallas and Fort Worth, and is nearby areas such as Grapevine, South Lake, Euless and Bedford. Dallas, or the ‘Big D’, is a large city towards the northwestern part of Texas, and is a major financial center for this region of America. Although the city’s skyscrapers are impressive, there are so many more attractions to enjoy in Dallas, and Dallas-Fort Worth Airport is the ideal arrival point at which to start an exciting holiday.

Locals and visitors in Dallas enjoy a city that is filled with fine restaurants, numerous top-quality shopping districts and lively nightlife entertainment, as well as many local tourist attractions. The downtown district of the city has many superb places to shop, and other malls are found throughout the city’s suburbs. Shopping hours in Dallas are generally between 10:00 and 21:00 on weekdays and Saturdays, with slightly shorter hours on Sundays. Some of the most popular areas include the Design Shopping District, in downtown Dallas for designer fashion and furniture, Grapevine Mills, just two kilometers from the Dallas-Fort Worth Airport, NorthPark Center, recently renovated to perfection, Stonebriar Center, The Galleria and the Shops at Willow Bend. Most of the favourite sightseeing locations are found in downtown Dallas and the historical West End district of the city, as well as nearby on the outskirts of the city. The annual Texas State Fair is a very popular event of the city as well.

One of the best ways to enjoy Dallas is by taking an ‘all in one’ guided tour. Visitors can customize their tour package to suit their needs, but in general, they will include the most famous Dallas sights, a rodeo and a sporting event. One major sports center in Dallas is the American Airlines Center, at 2500 Victory Avenue. Besides being a very imposing structure of the city, it hosts a number of regular sporting events, including basketball games of the famous Dallas Mavericks. Attractions that will appeal to the whole family are the Dallas Zoo, Dallas World Aquarium and Fair Park, located on the outskirts of the city, in Robert B. Cullum Boulevard. The Dallas Zoo is the largest in Texas, and features a fascinating array of African animals. There are antelope, lions and lemurs, and everything else right down to an impressive collection of spiders and invertebrates. The Dallas World Aquarium also offers the chance to see some exciting creatures. The aquarium has over 85,000 gallons of salt water. A favourite area of the aquarium is the underwater tunnel with views of reef life and an exhibition on predators.

Fair Park has been a much-loved entertainment area in Dallas for over fifty years. It features the Cotton Bowl Stadium, various amusement venues and is where the Texas State Fair is held. The 277-acre park is also considered to be a National Historic Landmark, and is home to some buildings of interesting Art Deco and a number of museums. The museums at Fair Park include the Age of Steam Railroad Museum, the African American Museum, the American Museum of Miniature Arts, the Dallas Museum of Natural History and the Women’s Museum, famous for its exhibits and studies of the important contributions make by women to the American society. The Natural History Museum delights children with its wonderful displays of dinosaur collections and animal exhibits, and the Miniature Arts Museum is as its name suggests, a museum of all things miniature. This is another museum ideal for children. There are even some nice collections of dolls houses and antique toys. The Age of Steam Railroad Museum features the world’s largest diesel electric locomotive, and many other meticulously restored steam engines. Other museums in Dallas include the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza, covering details of the assassination of John F. Kennedy, the Cavanaugh Flight Museum, the Frontiers of Flight Museum and the Meadow’s Museum of Art, featuring art works by Picasso, El Greco, Ribera, Murillo and Goya.

Nearby Dallas, and Dallas-Fort Worth Airport, is the Six Flags over Texas Amusement Park, located in Arlington, at 2201 Six Flags Road. This huge amusement park covers an area of 200 acres, and is filled with thrilling and exiting rides and roller coasters. It is also a popular site for concerts, musical shows and other entertainment, as well as the unique Batman stunt show, from March to December. The Six Flags over Texas Amusement Park is open every day, from 10:00 in the morning to late in the evening.

If you are visiting Texas, and you are a fan of the legendary TV series of Dallas, the Southfork Ranch can’t be missed. This is the real film set of the TV series and there are regular guided tours of the house. A collection of interesting items from the show is also on display, including Lucy’s wedding dress and the gun that shot JR. The Southfork Ranch is found in Parker, at 3700 Hogge Road, within easy driving distance of Dallas. Other popular areas nearby the city are White Rock Lake, where many residents of the area enjoy hiking, cycling, bird watching, fishing, boating activities and picnics, and the Fort Worth Gardens, featuring some remarkable waterfalls, fountains and sculptures. Within the city of Dallas, there are also many green areas, such as the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Gardens, LB Houston Park and the Old City Park, which is actually a re-construction of various buildings as they were between the years of 1840 and 1910. These include civil war ear working farm, a church and some Victorian houses.

The attractions in Dallas city, nearby the Dallas-Fort Worth Airport, are endless, and offer something to amuse the minds of all types of individuals.
